Web Analytics Question Support System

Bird's eye view of this wizard Add your comments or thoughts to this wizard page

Starting point: Your site conversions are down

The Problem:

  • Site conversions are down

First question:

Ask Unica NetInsight (or whichever web analytics solution you are using): Is traffic to your site also down?

Why are we asking?

If traffic is also down, the problem is likely related to acquisition. Otherwise, the issue is likely related to persuasion and conversion. (Though, in both cases there are other possibilities too, which we will investigate later

On the idea of expert systems for web analysis, James Dutton from Insightr wrote the following on the Yahoo Web Analytics Group. I allowed myself to replicate his post here with the goal of pointing interested readers to his alternative approach.
-------------
Well done on getting this published into a web application. [...] I tried addressing [the same goal] with a crowd sourced version of this same expert system a month or so ago (see: http://insightr.com/blog/2009/9/28/beta-testing-a-web-analytics-expert-system.html)

In this article, I looked at the conversations we'd had and thought of a way to address the fact that you give 20 analysts the same problem, and you'll most likely get 20 different solutions (or 20 people all asking for more data..).

The solution I developed using the GetSatisfaction site would allow anyone to contribute measurement questions and post solutions. Best solutions get voted
up. In many ways it's like this Yahoo groups site but a more 2.0 version with stronger metadata for finding questions and solutions. Here's a link to the site
I mocked up: http://www.getsatisfaction.com/analyticshelp

The other solution was developed using a new application called "SpicyNodes" that while not quite as collaborative, offered a different way of presenting the question and solution problem. I believe if you pay SpicyNodes you can invite more collaborators. Here's the mindmap I created using the same data we looked at: http://www.spicynodes.org/a/410f4c7cba58bb666aaacfd5f55f753f

Again, open to more feedback!

I still think this is a genius idea and one that is making good in-roads to making the analysis process more structured (and faster!) - fixing the laborious process of finding data, analysing and solutioning can and should be more straightforward (look at Google Intelligence for another approach to this).

Cheers, James.
